In short

In Queensland the big challenges are humidity and heavy rain. Choose thermally modified timber and a weatherproof roof, dry the sauna after every session and give rain somewhere to go.

Queensland's warm and humid climate is very different from a Nordic winter, but a traditional sauna works well in a Brisbane or Gold Coast backyard with the right setup. Here is what to plan for.

Managing humidity

Moisture is the main thing to manage in a humid climate. After each session leave the heater running for around 30 minutes with the door closed to dry the sauna. Then open the door for another 30 minutes, wipe down the benches and take out towels. Thermally modified timber helps because it absorbs less moisture than untreated timber.

Planning for storms and heavy rain

Summer storms can drop a lot of water quickly. Place the sauna on a flat, level and stable base such as a concrete slab, tiled area or reinforced deck. Make sure water drains away from the base and keep garden beds and sprinklers clear of the timber. Every Nova Sauna has SAUNAPROTECT™ weatherproof bitumen roof shingles.

Coastal and exposed sites

Near the coast salt air and wind add wear. Nova Saunas use 316 stainless steel fittings chosen for outdoor durability and 38mm thermally modified Canadian timber. Check exposed sites more often and keep up the exterior oiling schedule.

Choosing the right size

A couple may only need the 2 person Sauna Lite. Families and regular hosts may prefer the Sauna Cabin, Sauna Cube or Sauna Lodge.

  • Sauna Lite (2 person): 1750mm long, 1290mm wide and 2060mm high
  • Sauna Cabin (4 person): 2246mm long, 1740mm wide and 2386mm high
  • Sauna Cube (6 person): 2080mm long, 1800mm wide and 2060mm high
  • Sauna Lodge (8 person): 2306mm long, 2300mm wide and 2459mm high

Keeping parts dry before assembly

Your sauna arrives flat packed in a timber crate. Keep the panels, heater and glass door dry and covered until you are ready to build, especially in the wet season.

How your sauna is delivered

Nova Saunas are delivered on a truck with a tail lift for safe unloading. You get a two-hour delivery window on the day and a call about 30 minutes before arrival.

Council approval and power in Queensland

Check with your local council whether your sauna needs approval before you order. The heater must be hardwired to your switchboard on a dedicated circuit by a licensed electrician. See our electrical and installation guide for details.
